This paper deals with Italian translations of Meditaciones del Quijote by Ortega y Gasset. The methodology followed is a contrastive method focused on metaphors, metonymies and synecdoches starting from Prandi’s analysis of tropes. The aim is not only to justify some choices made in one of the Italian editions, but to show the close relationship between Ortega’s philosophy and figurative writing, and then the risks involved in deforming tendencies that you can find in many passages of domesticating translations which tend to privilege the designative function over the metaphorical one. The result in many cases is the guilty split of the bridge that connects verbal with nonverbal. The hope which animates this paper is that future retranslations can recover lost tropes.
