Abstract

The political writings of David Hume, collected in this first complete Italian edition, raise uncomfortable questions that are difficult to place in the canonical classifications of modern and contemporary historiography, which has so far portrayed Hume as an ambiguous, indecipherable, even "disturbing" thinker. Nevertheless, his ideas on the origin of the state and political obedience, his vision of freedom, property, justice, the immutable nature of man, institutions, the free market, political stability and international relations, as well as enrolling him in the list of the main modern political theorists, are also a valuable source of inspiration for the development of liberalism and, above all, conservatism. Hume, in fact, turns out to be the first true conservative of modern times, for having inaugurated, anticipating by a few decades the counterrevolutionary theses of Edmund Burke, a "political" conservatism in the true sense of the term, free from the influence of religious traditionalism and based on the defense of order, security and the interest of the nation, on a realistic view of political experience and on distrust of radicalism, the spirit of violent innovation, rationalist arrogance, ideological rhetoric and sectarian fanaticism.
