This book offers an in-depth analysis of lectures delivered by business academics in university settings. In response to the increasingly important disciplinary status of Business Studies and to changing trends in the global workplace, special attention is given to features that are recognized as having key role in successful lecture comprehension, but are often the most problematic for non-native speakers. The study is based on a corpus of recorded and transcribed lectures. It uses an integrated methodology, incorporating techniques from both corpus linguistics and discourse analysis and. In addition, observational methods are used to investigate selected extra-linguistic features. The analysis works from the hypothesis that Business Studies lectures represent a merger of three broad categories of discourse (spoken, academic and disciplinary), and that this multi-faceted nature is reflected in the speech and behaviours of the lecturers. The book gives a full-circle interpretive account of this important variety of spoken academic discourse, and thus also provides pedagogic insights for teaching English for Business Studies.
