The sustainability of a transportation system is a major concern for urbanization, as evidenced by the ever-increasing air pollution problems in major cities. There is no doubt that rail transport brings enormous benefits in most sectors: sustainability, safety, and speed, once it is organized and designed according to 21st century principles. In the following research we intend to proceed with a systematic analysis of the existing literature, applying the necessary inclusion and exclusion criteria and a bibliometric analysis. We intend to continue with an analysis of the Trenitalia case study, which, like many companies, has become sustainable in the triple environmental, economic, and social meaning, adopting increasingly green mobility. Once the data has been analyzed, also making a pre- and post-Covid comparison, we will have a precise picture of the impact and we will be able to suggest very specific policy and managerial implications, aimed above all at how and where to invest resources for the "Freccia Verde" project. Clearly the approach to sustainability that we want to analyze is not only limited to CO2 emissions but also to the use of plastic and other polluting materials that are used on board. A comparison will also be made with the transport system of the Mediterranean basin, to see which one has greater impacts on the environment and what determines the differences, especially in terms of costs since taking a train cost more than flying.
