The paper deals with the study of the chapter house of the abbey of S. Maria della Matina, near the town of San Marco Argentano (CS). It is a very important architectural testimony, founded around 1065 as a Benedictine monastery. The Order’s monks lived there until 1221, leaving the structure in steep decline. The following year it was taken over by the Cistercians, who revived its fortunes and modified its architectural layout, adapting it to the models of Cistercian Gothic. In the 15th century the abbey again plunged into a deep state of decline until its suppression in 1652 at the behest of Pope Innocent X. It became state property in 1809 and later donated, already in a state of ruins, to Bourbon army general L. Valentoni, whose heirs still administer it today. Among the scarce architectural evidence that has come down to us, the ancient Gothic chapter house, the object of study of the present contribution, stands out, consisting of naves covered by cross vaults and supported by refined beam pillars, according to the Cistercian model of Casamari Abbey. The present research addresses the study of the monument through its survey. The techniques employed for the construction of the morphometric database involved the use of a mini drone and a laser scanner. A thermal imaging camera was used to read the construction materials hidden by the plasters. The collection of information and the results of the conducted analyses were poured within two immersive reality applications, specifically generated to offer visitors an educational experience for a better understanding of the work, capable of highlighting its architectural meanings, including latent ones.
