Finite feedstocks are today replaced by renewable sources, and biomass is one of the most important. The continuous demand for fossil fuels is becoming a serious problem for the population. This chapter will start with a general description of biomass, the main uses, and applications. A deep focus will be examined about the relationship of biomass exploitation with environment and climate. Biomass is a general term that includes many types of natural feedstocks but an attempt to categorize them will be made during the discussion. In addition, a chemical characterization of the most important categories and the relative types of energy produced will be examined. There are many strategies to convert these raw materials, but the main commonly used will be quoted. At the end of the chapter, an argumentation of biomass economy will be discussed, with the aim to explain how biomass is a valid candidate in many fields of applications for a better and greener future.
