The concept of the forest has been interpreted in a variety of ways by society at large. Firstly, it is often perceived as an impenetrable entity, separate from human habitation. However, this is in stark contrast to the diverse and varied characteristics of forestry as a whole. The present essay puts forward a proposal to interpret the history of the forests of the Papal State as having been the subject of significant 'manipulation'. Examples drawn from cartography reveal the existence of 'gruyère' woods, where the tree cover was interrupted to create spaces intended for cultivation. This was not a degradation of the forest in abstract terms, but rather the result of activation practices. These practices did not compromise the existence of the forest resource, but rather enabled it to be adapted to the needs of local communities. The analysis of documentary material enables a nuanced interpretation of the forest in the early modern age, circumventing the limitations imposed by abstract modelling.

Abstract
The analysis of documentary material enables a nuanced interpretation of the forest in the early modern age, circumventing the limitations imposed by abstract modelling.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
