Abstract: In ancient perfume studies, perfumers, who were able, through their art, to ‘build’ new fragrances, remain almost completely in the background. This is due both to the scant documentation available and to the fact that our sources, especially the literary ones, which provide us with most of the information, mention spices and perfumes and those who in various ways and at different times made use of them, but leave in the shadows the perfumers, whose identity and skills are specified only in a few cases. This paper tries to shed light on some Athenian perfumers of the 5th and 4th centuries BC about whom the tradition is somewhat more abundant.
