In the current socio-economic context, the concept of sustainability in its broadest conception plays an increasingly important role. Sustainability has increasingly become an integral and determining part of the strategies of many companies. Taking a stance towards the impact of one's business on the environment, undertaking "responsible" actions, aimed at reconciling economic aspects with social and environmental impacts is important not only for large companies, with a strong international presence, but even for the smaller ones, which operate mainly in the national or local context. In the light of these premises, this work originates which, after investigating the theoretical aspects related to environmental sustainability, examines the main initiatives in terms of sustainable development and environmental protection, promoted at international and European level, focusing in particular on the agri-food sector where the issue of food quality and safety becomes more and more a central theme.
