English language is one of the mandatory courses at the University of Calabria which foresees the achievement of at least a B1 level for undergraduate students and a higher level for Master’s students. The concept of learner autonomy plays a crucial role in language learning and teaching since the 1980s and it is still a current topic. It represents one of the most important assets within the University Language Centre (CLA) context at the University of Calabria. Indeed, the CLA has actively promoted learner autonomy, self-assessment and the use of the ELP through different approaches, facilities and tools. This paper takes a narrative approach focusing on the description of the process adopted within the general guidelines of the CLA which aim at fostering the effectiveness of learner autonomy, and outlines a class activity of how fostering autonomy and self-assessment may be implemented with Master’s students.
