The aim of this study is to show how principles from contemporary Translation Studies can be applied to the rendering of selected lexemes in Old English poetry into modern English. Recent methodological approaches have prompted the revision of many Old English translations, highlighting that, at times, choices have been shaped by ideological and cultural factors, yielding conjectural renderings misaligned with the medieval author’s intent. The two case studies presented here illustrate how, within translations of Anglo-Saxon texts, insights from gender studies and renewed attention to women’s roles in the medieval context are foregrounding a distinct female poetic persona.
