Root tourism is a form of sustainable tourism, both in environmental and socio-cultural terms, generated by emigrants and their descendants who wish to reconnect with their land of origin. These travelers seek local life experiences that allow them to feel like an integral part of the host community, approaching it with respect and participation. This phenomenon develops mainly in lesser-known destinations and/or rural areas, where tourists can savor authenticity, traditions, and other aspects of the community’s tangible and, above all, intangible heritage, thus contributing to the regeneration of marginal and depopulated territories. Root tourism therefore intersects with other tourism segments, such as rural, wellness, and food-and-wine tourism. Interest in agricultural resources and gastronomy represents one of the main motivations for root travel, as ancestral tourists seek flavors of memory and moments of nostalgia linked to family and cultural experiences. Life in small villages and rural settings, characterized by slow rhythms and authentic relationships, fosters inner reflection, the recovery of a sense of belonging, and the reconstruction of these travelers’ cultural identity.
