Nietzsche assigns a central role to sensibility and the senses. In particular, alongside hearing, Nietzsche regards smell as the most refined and the most “spiritual” of the senses, capable of grasping aspects of reality that tend instead to elude touch and sight – senses that are more “objective,” more oriented toward seizing and immobilizing becoming, and thus unable to perceive its infinite nuances. From a path that intertwines epistolary materials and philosophical texts, the richness of Nietzsche’s olfactory universe emerges. It is an “universe” because it appears on multiple levels within his writings: biographical, physiological, psychological, and philosophical. Above all, by following the guiding thread of smell and odors, it becomes possible to rethink – from an unusual perspective – some of the most important themes of Nietzsche’s thought and to discover, unexpectedly, that smell occupies the very heart of an “apocalyptic” experience of temporality, essential not only for Nietzsche but for every human being.
Riassunto: Nietzsche attribuisce alla sensibilità e ai sensi un ruolo centrale. In particolare, accanto all’udito, Nietzsche considera l’olfatto come il più raffinato e il più ‘spirituale’ tra i sensi, capace di cogliere aspetti della realtà che tendono invece a sfuggire al tatto e alla vista, sensi, questi ultimi, più ‘oggettivi’, più orientati ad afferrare, immobilizzare il divenire, a non coglierne le infinite sfumature. Da un percorso che intreccia materiali epistolari e testi filosofici, emerge la ricchezza dell’universo olfattivo di Nietzsche. Si tratta di un ‘universo’ perché sono molteplici i piani in cui lo si incontra nei testi: biografico, fisiologico, psicologico, filosofico. Soprattutto, seguendo il filo conduttore dell’olfatto e degli odori, diventa possibile ripensare in una prospettiva insolita alcuni dei temi più importanti della ricerca nietzscheana e scoprire, in maniera inattesa, che l’olfatto si colloca al cuore di un’esperienza ‘apocalittica’ della temporalità, essenziale non solo per Nietzsche ma per ogni umano.
