This book analyses Pianoro I at Timpone della Motta in Francavilla Marittima within the broader framework of research on the Oenotrian landscape of the Sibaritide between protohistory, the Orientalizing period and the Archaic phase. Through the study of a systematic surface survey based on the comprehensive geolocation of artefacts, the research offers an ultra-high-resolution reading of the material distributions documented on one of the principal terraces of the settlement. Its aim is to understand the role of Pianoro I within the wider settlement system of Timpone della Motta, by relating density patterns, material classes, chronologies, formation processes of the archaeological record and modern disturbances. The study addresses methodological issues such as the definition of the site, the visibility of surface evidence, the relationship between artefact concentrations and post-depositional processes, as well as the impact of previous excavations, infrastructures, modern arrangements and recent transformations of the surface. The analysis of the distributions, integrated with spatial-statistical processing and density maps, indicates that Pianoro I may be interpreted as an active component of the settlement, involved in dynamics of occupation, movement, domestic organization and spatial transformation. This research contributes to the reconstruction of the archaeological landscape of Timpone della Motta and to the understanding of the processes through which the Oenotrian communities of Ionian Calabria structured and reworked their settlement spaces over the longue durée and within the context of their interactions with the Greek world.
