Zavatta effectively uses Nietzsche's notes and glosses on Emerson's works as a thread for his comparison between the two intellectuals, emphasizing how their value is not just on the literary level, but also on the philosophical ground. According to the author, the main merit of Zavatta's work, in comparison with the previous critical interpretations, is that it doesn't use only a historical-philological approach or a philosophical one, but successfully combines both.
