This studyassessedtheprotectiveactionagainstbiologicalfungalgrowthoftwoconsolidatingproductsapplied towood.ExperimentsexaminedeffectsproducedbywhiteandbrownrotfungionWhitepoplar(Populus alba) andNorwayspruce(Picea abies) treated withtwoconsolidants,ParaloidB72andRegalrez1126, appliedbothindividuallyandtogether,withtheaimofevaluatingdifferinglevelsofpenetrationinto andlocationinthewood.Themainaimwastotestwhethertheseproducts,whicharegenerallyapplied duringrestoration,couldactagainstfungalgrowthonhealthywoodorincreasebiologicalattack.Changes inbothmorphologicalandchemicallevelsinducedbyfungalattackwereobserved,susceptibilityto biologicalcolonisationwasanalysed,andprotectiveefficacywastested.Severalseriesofwoodsamplestreated withtheaboveproductswereplacedonagarplatesinoculatedwithtwofungalspecies(brown-rot decayfungus, Fomitopsis palustris, andwhite-rotdecayfungus, Trametes versicolor) andgrowthwasobserved for2months.TheresultsforNorwayspruceshowedselectivedevelopmentofoneofthetworotsaccording toproductapplication:bothproductsappliedtogethercausedslowedgrowthofbothfungalspecies. TheWhitepolarsamplestreatedwiththeconsolidants,bothaloneandtogether,allshowedsimilar behaviour.SEManalysiswasalsocarriedoutinordertoobservechangesinwoodmicrostructureinduced byrotcolonisation.
