Abstract. We measured energy distributions of electrons emitted in the interaction of 300 eV Na+ with Al surfaces, as a function of ion incidence angle. We observe that the intensity of electron emission shows the same dependence on ion incidence angle as the intensity of Auger electrons from decay of projectiles excited by electron promotion in collision with target atoms. It is concluded that electron emission is mainly determined in binary atomic collisions, similar to those that are clearly signaled by the observed Auger spectrum of sodium.
