The article discusses the voluntary sector in southern Italy. The information used derives from surveys conducted in Calabria and Campania. The results highlight the fragmentation of charitable action whereby the voluntary sector is undergoing a crisis. This, however, cannot be explained only as the result of endogenous change because it is also due to the lax regulation of the local welfare system.
