Claudian’s carm. min. 29 climaxes with the representation of the exceptional conubium between a magnet statue of Venus and one of iron in the image of Mars. The poem joins elements of the relative tradition as to the motives regarding the love between magnet and iron, as well as the theme regarding the love between Venus and Mars. At the beginning of the poem it is also maybe a special predilection of Claudian for metals. The conubium scene is described in terms of great physical concreteness, but his conception is quite complex. The scene implies, in fact, not only the sensual representation of nature, but also the knowledge of the existence of a force that transcends the same physical reality.

Abstract
Claudian’s carm. min. 29 climaxes with the representation of the exceptional conubium between a magnet statue of Venus and one of iron in the image of Mars. The poem joins elements of the relative tradition as to the motives regarding the love between magnet and iron, as well as the theme regarding the love between Venus and Mars. At the beginning of the poem it is also maybe a special predilection of Claudian for metals. The conubium scene is described in terms of great physical concreteness, but his conception is quite complex. The scene implies, in fact, not only the sensual representation of nature, but also the knowledge of the existence of a force that transcends the same physical reality.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
