The reaction of silver triflate (AgOTf) and silver dodecyl sulfate (AgDOS) with two nonmesomorphic 4,4'-disubstituted 2,2'-bipyridines, L-n, yielded a series of bis-chelate ionic silver complexes [Ag(L-n)(2)]X. Complexation induced columnar mesomorphism in all the silver(I) tetra-branched bipyridine derivatives and the role of the counterion proved to be crucial in the generation of different symmetries of the mesophase. Abstract
