An open resonator system with an optimized design of the waveguide-to-cavity transition is proposed in this work for an accurate dielectric material characterization. An equivalent circuit model is properly derived for the optimization of the coupling and the retrieval of complex permittivity. K-band experimental validations are discussed for thin grounded dielectric sheets usually adopted for microwave planar circuits and antennas.
