This paper aims to focus on the role of the notion of insularity in the fifth century BC Athenian ideology, and its use in the thucydidean analysis of the Peloponnesian War, with special regard to the Sicilian narrative. The conflict between a continental power that is almost an island (Athens) again- st the major city (Syracuse) of an island (Sicily) that is almost a continent oVers the better background for the analysis.
