In the summer of 1897 Ferdinand de Saussure lectured on the Theory of Syllable at the University of Geneva. It was for him a longstanding argument of research, and the three lectures explained in a systematic way his position and his proposal. A stenographic transcription was done at the moment by his pupil, Charles Bally, who used it later for an appendix in the Cours de linguistiqque générale. Then the original text was lost. Many scholars looked fot it, but without results. Recently, in my research for saussurean texts, I recognized it in a misplaced booklet in a collection of the library of Geneva, and here is the first edition of this fundamental text.
