Dehydrinsbelongtoaproteinfamilywhoseexpressionmaybeinducedorenhancedbydevelopmentalprocessandenvironmentalstressesthatleadtoceldehydration.AdehydringenenamedOesDHNwasisolatedandcharacterizedfromoleaster(OleaeuropaeaL.subsp.europaea,var.sylvestris),thewildformofolive.ToelucidatethecontributionofOesDHNinthedevelopmentofdroughttolerance,itsexpressionlevelswereinvestigatedinoleasterplantsduringdevelopmentandunderdroughtstresscondition.TheinvolvementofOesDHNinplantstressresponsewasalsoevaluatedinArabidopsistransgeniclines,engineeredtooverexpressthisgene,andexposedtoacontrolledmildosmoticstress.OesDHNexpressionwasfoundtobemodulatedduringdevelopmentandinducedundermilddroughtstressinoleasterplants.Inaddition,theArabidopsistransgenicplantsshowedabettertolerancetoosmoticstressthanwild-typeplants.TheresultsdemonstratedthatOesDHNexpressionisinducedbydroughtstressandisabletoconferosmoticstresstolerance.WesuggestaroleforOesDHN,asaputativefunctionalmarkerofplantstresstolerance.
