What human beings most fear is being reduced to mere things. In this paper, I analyze such a fear through a philosophical analysis of Heidegger’s distinction between human being and stone. According to Heidegger Homo sapiens is a subject just because she is not a thing. The very condition of being a subject is the capacity to say to herself “I”. Therefore, there is a very strong connection between subjectivity and language from one side, and fear of things on the other side. On the contrary, psychoanalysis is the attempt to give a body to the subject. That is, it is the paradoxical attempt to free the human body from language. Psychoanalysis is the attempt to allow the human subject to become a body, that is, to become a thing.
