Atene e Cartagine nel V sec. a.C.: conflitto o intesa?

The tension between the facts and their perception in the treatment of Carthage in the Athenian political propaganda of the V century BC demands that we attempt to explain and supplement the fragmentary evidence reflected in the existing sources. A renewed examination of the documentation shows that from the Athenian point of view, during the crucial phase of the Peloponnesian war, Carthage was seen as a wealthy and important polis, holding a key position in the western Mediterranean. Though it was useful for Athenian demagogues to stress plans of conquest, as a matter of fact the relation between Athens and Carthage was by no means hostile, and the two cities showed great respect for their respective spheres of influence.

La tensione fra gli eventi e la loro percezione, rispetto ai modi in cui Cartagine viene trattata nella propaganda politica ateniese, richiede che si tenti di spiegare e integrare le scarse notizie offerte dalle fonti disponibili. Un nuovo esame della documentazione mostra come negli anni cruciali della guerra del Peloponneso Cartagine, posta in una posizione chiave nel Mediterraneo occidentale, fu percepita in Atene come una polis di grande potenza e importanza. Se, sul piano della politica interna, fu utile per i demagoghi ateniesi agitare piani di conquista, in realtà le relazioni fra Atene e Cartagine furono tutt’altro che ostili, anzi le due città mostrarono grande attenzione al rispetto delle reciproche sfere di influenza.
