The present paper aims at investigating the relationship between phonetic changes and the perception of identity in three different generations of Calabrian emigrants in Munich. Data have been collected through semi-structured interviews conducted with thirty-one Calabrian emigrants in Munich and with ten Calabrian informants living in Calabria, who represented the control group. A perceptive test has been administered to a group of Calabrian naïve evaluators in order to understand the kind of phonetic elements they associate to the informants’ origin. Data analysis has shown that the individual perception of identity plays an important role in maintaining or losing Italian and/ or Calabrian language.
