Il conservatorismo politico di David Hume

Although is almost an obvious fact in the world history of criticism, however, the political conservatism of David Hume has been subject to manipulations in the Italian historiography, which has tried to accredit a Hume’s distorted figure: champion of progressivism and ambiguous, “worrying” political thinker. Through the analysis of the main writings of Hume and on the basis of authoritative critical interpretations mainly offered in the Anglo-American area, the paper aims to establish the truth about the political thought of Hume, proving that he was the first conservative thinker in the modern world, anticipating the counter-revolutionary thesis of Edmund Burke and proposing a “political” conservatism in the true sense of the term, that is secular, devoid of the influence of religious traditionalism and wary of radicalism, spirit of violent innovation and rationalist arrogance.

Diversamente dalla storiografia di area anglosassone, che da tempo tende ormai a considerare David Hume come uno dei primi e più coerenti esponenti del conservatorismo politico (una sorta di Burke ante litteram), per la critica italiana una simile collocazione intellettuale e ideologica continua a risultare ostica e problematica. Si ammette, al massimo, che il suo sia stato un conservatorismo “incidentale”, se non del tutto incoerente con le premesse del suo pensiero morale e filosofico. In realtà, è sufficiente l’analisi degli scritti politici di Hume, di recente riproposti in traduzione italiana, per scoprire come le sue riflessioni sulla società e il potere fossero in effetticaratterizzate, non solo da una vena scettica di matrice storico-realista, ma anche da una visione fortemente criticanei confronti del radicalismo politico, del razionalismo filosofico e dell’idea che siapossibile costruire, a partire da una natura umana improntata all’altruismo, un ordine civile stabile e perfetto.
