Abstract

An investigationwasconductedtodeterminetheeffectsoftheheavymetal,cadmium(Cd),onthegills of theteleostfish, Thalassomapavo Linnaeus,1758.Thefisheswereexposedtoseveralsublethal concentrationsofcadmium(10,40,60and120 mM (mg/L))foraperiodof48,96and192h.Thevalueof the LC50after96hofcadmiumexposure,determinedusingtheSystemofFinney,wasequalto 128.3 mM. Thegillsofthefisheswereexaminedbylightandelectronmicroscopy.Toxic,apoptoticand cadmiumeffectswereanalyzedusingsomeneuropeptides,metallothioneins(MT),caspase3,PCNAand calmodulin,asbioindicators,respectively.Theresultsshowedthatthealterationsinthegillswere proportional totheexposureperiodsandconcentrationsofthemetal,whichwerefoundtobebothdose and timedependent.Thebiologicalresponsesinthegillsofthetestedanimalsarediscussedinrelation to resultsobtainedbyanalysisofthebiomarkers.Thesedatamaybeusedfortheplanningofamodelto determine biologicalriskinthemarineenvironmentandmaybeparticularlyusefultoinvestigate organismsexposedtocadmium.
