One of the factors limiting the light throughput from actual backlight systems is the absorption in the color filters. The use of surface relief gratings put on top of a side-lit lightguide represents an innovative way for realizing efficient backlight systems. The light outcoupling produced by these structures is however strongly related to the grating parameters and drawbacks can easily emerge if these parameters are not carefully optimized. A new 5-rays color configuration is reported that avoids color-mixing drawbacks and allows a more homogeneous distribution of light inside the lightguide. Early stage measurements have shown an agreement with results of simulations.

Abstract
One of the factors limiting the light throughput from actual backlight systems is the absorption in the color filters. The use of surface relief gratings put on top of a side-lit lightguide represents an innovative way for realizing efficient backlight systems. The light outcoupling produced by these structures is however strongly related to the grating parameters and drawbacks can easily emerge if these parameters are not carefully optimized. A new 5-rays color configuration is reported that avoids color-mixing drawbacks and allows a more homogeneous distribution of light inside the lightguide. Early stage measurements have shown an agreement with results of simulations.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
