Langmuir-Blodgett films of an amphiphilic ate-compound were treated by intense polarized light in the range of the material absorption and additionally stabilized by UV light to prevent solubility of the compound in liquid crystals. Such films orient liquid crystal perpendicular to the light polarization vector. Anchoring energy and pretilt angles may be controlled by an irradiation regime. The electrooptical properties of liquid crystal cells (field induced birefringence, twist effect) with light treated orienting films and a special case of the liquid crystal orientation by a holographic grating recorded in the orienting films are demonstrated.

Abstract
Langmuir-Blodgett films of an amphiphilic ate-compound were treated by intense polarized light in the range of the material absorption and additionally stabilized by UV light to prevent solubility of the compound in liquid crystals. Such films orient liquid crystal perpendicular to the light polarization vector. Anchoring energy and pretilt angles may be controlled by an irradiation regime. The electrooptical properties of liquid crystal cells (field induced birefringence, twist effect) with light treated orienting films and a special case of the liquid crystal orientation by a holographic grating recorded in the orienting films are demonstrated.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
