O artigo aborda o complexo tema da “identidade” na longa histόria da migração italiana na América latina, privilegiando o estudo do caso da emigração italiana de origem meridional no Brasil. Não se descreve uma evolução diacrônica linear da questão, mas sim a complicada interação entre o “patriotismo" da emigração política do século XIX antes da Unificação, a dimensão comunitária dos lugares de procedência da emigração de massa, a redescoberta – mesmo no caldeirão de diferentes dimensões regionais e de vilarejos – de pertencer a uma comum Pátria italiana. Além disso, levam-se em conta – depois da “nacionalização" dos "italianos do exterior" na época fascista – os processos de integração e absorção nos países de acolhimento e, por fim, o ressurgimento e a redescoberta de pertencer às comunidades locais e municipais de origem.
