The molecular axis orientation of CO and NO molecules adsorbed at room temperature on Ni(111) at low coverage has been studied by the XPD technique. The CO and NO uptake versus exposure has been followed by XPS. Our results show that CO molecules are perpendicular to the surface, while NO molecules are strongly tilted or lying down.

Abstract
