The centrality of the description of pain in some of the so called Old English elegies (The Wanderer, The Seafarer, Deor, Wulf and Eadwacer, The Wife’s Lament), allows to evaluate them as a whole, if not as a literary genre, at least as texts which share similar themes. Thus, we could analyze the semantic and the style types through which these representations are proposed, particularly referring to the many occurrences in which the condition of unease and inconvenience is connected to mind-words. The varied richness of the solutions found shows a common perception of suffering both as a categorical imposition that the individual cannot escape and as a process to be experienced in a silent and internalized way. In addition, there’s no use of elegy specific stylistic feature and lexemes: beyond the common ability in producing an emotional message of undeniable immediacy, each text reveals a different degree of originality in the intertextual links related to a common cultural context. Each text betrays its own identity in the arrangement and organization of its thematic and formal elements.
La centralità assunta dalla descrizione del dolore in alcune delle cosiddette old english elegies (The Wanderer, The Seafarer, Deor, Wulf and Eadwacer, The Wife’s Lament), ne consente una valutazione d’insieme, se non come genere letterario, almeno come testi che condividono tematiche analoghe. È stato, pertanto, possibile analizzare modalità semantiche e stilistiche attraverso le quali tali rappresentazioni sono proposte con particolare riferimento alle numerose occorrenze in cui una condizione di malessere e di disagio sia posta in relazione a mind-words. La variegata ricchezza delle soluzioni individuate trova unità nel proporre la percezione della sofferenza sia come un’imposizione categorica cui l’individuo non può sottrarsi, sia come un processo da esperire in modo silente e interiorizzato. Non emergono, inoltre, usi di stilemi e lessemi specifici delle elegie: nella condivisa capacità di produrre un messaggio emotivo di indiscutibile immediatezza, ciascun testo denuncia un diverso grado di originalità nei legami intertestuali intessuti con un comune ambiente culturale di riferimento; ciascun testo presenta una propria identità nella disposizione e organizzazione dei suoi elementi tematici e formali.
