In order to better preserve a monument, it is important, not only to be fully aware of its state of conservation, but also to be able to recognize any critical phenomena that might cause damage to it. Therefore, specialized studies should focus on rational methods, thus allowing correct interpretations of critical phenomena, the definition of the most suitable actions to take, and the identification and elimination of the causes which, over time, could damage the structure. Background knowledge plays a significant role in boosting the importance of cultural heritage and promoting enhancement actions able to raise the awareness and participation of the community. Abstract
