Fjalë shtegtuese: malattie degli animali e medicina popolare in albanese e in tre varietà arbëreshe della Calabria

Veterinary terminology in Albanian and in some Arberesh dialectal varieties of Calabria (Lungro, San Basile and Santa Sofia d’Epiro in the Province of Cosenza) is the topic of this contribution. The analysis and study of this lexical field has been carried out both on the basis of data collected during a field research in these three centres and of all the terms extracted from the 1980 edition of Fjalor i Gjuhes se Sotme Shqipe. The analysis of medical veterinary terminology in FGJSSH 1980 has put in evidence many lacks and deficiencies with reference to the number of lexical items and to the correspondances between scientific and non-scientific terminology. As far as Arberesh, except for a short collection in Bellusci (1991) on sheep’s diseases and their cures, one may hitherto register both the lack of a complete lexical repertoire and of specific studies on this argument. Collated with lexemes extracted from the FGJSSH 1980 only 2/71 of Arberesh arbour terms are mutual with Fjalor, 15/71 have their roots in Albanian while the 51/71 (71,8%) are borrowed from the adjoining romance varieties with adaptations. The work ends with brief observations on popular medicine and cures of animal diseases most of wich has now gone out of use and has been often associated with magic-religious formulas in the past.
