The systematic study of the pathologies affecting the surface of a building is crucial to formulate the correct evaluations underlying a conservation or restoration work. Therefore it is suitable to plan and manage the procedures of surface analysis through innovatory methods which can increase knowledge control. This paper describes a procedure which allows to study the pathologies existing on a surface by means of mathematical and matrix applications. This procedure defines the criteria to perform an adequate and representative sampling and to identify and evaluate the incidence of the pathologies as well as the relative incidence of the charges necessary to carry out the works required. The surfaces to analyse are adequately partitioned in definite areas which are assigned specific matrix structures that allow a detailed study of the pathologies. Such a study can be limited to particular situations or extended as far as to consider all the surfaces of a building.
