This paper aims to characterise the deterioration resulting from the working of stone surfaces. Particularly, the morphological variations, occurred on the faces of small samples of stone materials subjected to speci!c machining tests, have been analysed through the method of automatic image processing and the observation of SEM images. Thanks to Scion Imag image analysis software, this method provides quantitative data on porosity and roughness parameters and allows to formulate re"ections on deterioration which are useful to identify the causes of surface pathologies. The experimentation procedure has been carried out by using samples of Mendicino Stone and S. Lucido Stone taken from the quarries which provided most of the stone materials that were employed to build the structures and architectural decorations of the province of Cosenza.
