In 20th century’s Linguistics, the most known statement of the semi- otic omnipotence of natural languages was made by Hjelmslev at the end of Prolegomena, and was received (almost) without discussion by the French- speaking structuralist tradition. In Italy, instead, it was the subject of a de- bate, which ended (at least temporarily) with De Mauro’s Minisemantica. This debate can not be fully clarified if we remain within the limits of the structur- al, post-hjelmslevian tradition, but one needs to turn to the Italian tradition in linguistics, namely to Antonino Pagliaro’s heritage. In Pagliaro’s works, in- deed, we can find a different perspective, and a peculiar shaping of the issue, which is worth of reconsideration still today.
