In this paper we reflect upon the history of scientific method and its effectiveness as a problem solving strategy in personal and existential matters. These considerations are naturally connected to the history of scientific disciplines as well as philosophy and, over a broader field, to the history of ideas. Moreover, they find broad application both in literature and psychology. The reading of a novel will be the starting point of our discussion on scientific and philosophical related issues, as this allows us to point out the numerous ways in which literature contributed to eminently scientific topics. Hence, the traditional divide between humanities and science appears to be obsolete
