KYRA KYRALINA AND THE DEFORMING TENDENCIES OF TRANSLATION (Abstract) This study has as its purpose the analytical description of the current problems encountered to convert Istrati’s masterpiece into another language. This paper adresses how Italy and America perceive the Romanian author of Kyra Kyralina and try different «translation strategies». The translations studied, published for the first time in 1925 (G. F. Cecchini - Società Anonima Editrice «La Voce»), 1947 (Gino Lupi - Garzanti), 1978 (Gino Lupi/Pino Fiori - Feltrinelli) and 2010 (Christopher Sawyer-Lauçanno - Talisman House), show specific approaches for Istrati’s French prose and we analyse them in order to highlight some interesting linguistic characteristics and «figures de traduction».
