The Attic elegy of the fifth century is mostly evidence of the evolution of the means of expression, of the confluence in that literary genre of new cultural motifs, of the passage from the Archaic age to the typical forms of the Hellenistic age. The melic poetry undergoes a profound evolution in this period under the influence of new music, as evidenced by the poetics of the exponents of the ‘New Dithyramb’, and the elegy is greatly affected by the new trends, especially in the dark and twisted expression, and in the new metrics. Such innovations are strongly evident in the fr. 1 (= 89 Leurini) of Ion of Chios, one of the most representative exponents of elegiac sympotic poetry in the classical age.
