The purpose of this article is to analyze the problems of motherhood in prison. The first problem consists in trying to understand how motherhood - psychological, physical, relational, social and affective - can be experienced by detained mothers, who are forced to live their relationship in a coercive environment. The second major problem, which is closely linked to the first, concerns children who are forced to suffer, directly and indirectly, the influence of problems related to detention. The children of detained mothers have the opportunity to live in prison with their mother until they are three years old (children in prison). Children who are over three years of age cannot live in prison with their mothers and these are indirectly imprisoned children. Mothers who are confined in prison generally try to maintain and safeguard the relationship with their children in a mother-child relationship that must adapt to that of prison, but the distress perceived by the mothers is transmitted to the 2 children and vice versa. This happens mainly because the environment is not suitable for a correct psychophysical development of the child and also seems to be a conditioning factor as regards the mother-child relationship. The serious problems of "motherhood in prison" are closely linked to the prison environment that negatively affects the mother-child relationship and also to the rigid rules of a restrictive situation that end up limiting parenting capacity. The children (directly detained or indirectly imprisoned) of detained mothers feel the limits prescribed by the prison environment and, in any case, the emotional relationships within the walls are stunted and depriving and end up having negative effects on mothers and their children. Precisely for these reasons, it would be useful to invest in research activities in order to understand the needs of mothers and those of children and to be able to develop psychopedagogical actions aimed at guaranteeing as much as possible a "healthy" relationship between mother and child outside the prison .
Lo scopo di questo articolo è quello di analizzare i problemi della maternità in carcere. Il primo problema consiste nel cercare di capire come la maternità - psicologica, fisica, relazionale, sociale e affettiva - possa essere vissuta dalle madri detenute, le quali sono costrette a vivere il loro rapporto in un ambiente coercitivo. Il secondo grande problema, che è strettamente legato al primo, riguarda i figli che sono costretti a subire, direttamente ed indirettamente, l’influenza delle problematiche connesse alla detenzione. I figli delle madri detenute hanno la possibilità di vivere in carcere con la propria madre fino al compimento dei tre anni di vita (bambini reclusi). I figli che hanno un'età maggiore di tre anni, non possono vivere all’interno del carcere con le proprie mamme e questi sono i bambini indirettamente reclusi. Le madri che sono ristrette in carcere generalmente cercano di mantenere e di salvaguardare il rapporto con i propri figli in una relazione madre-figlio che deve adattarsi a quella detentiva, ma il disagio percepito dalle madri è trasmesso ai figli e viceversa. Questo accade principalmente perché l'ambiente risulta essere non adatto per un corretto sviluppo psicofisico del bambino e sembra essere anche un fattore condizionante per quanto riguarda il rapporto madre-figlio. I gravi problemi della "maternità in carcere" sono strettamente legati all'ambiente carcerario che influenza negativamente il rapporto madre-figlio e anche alle regole rigide di una situazione restrittiva che finiscono per limitare la capacità genitoriale. I figli (direttamente detenuti o indirettamente reclusi) delle madri detenute avvertono i limiti prescritti dall'ambiente carcerario e, comunque, le relazioni affettive dentro le mura sono stentate e deprivanti e finiscono per avere effetti negativi sulle madri e sui loro figli. Proprio per questi motivi, sarebbe utile investire sull'attività di ricerca per poter capire le esigenze delle madri e quelle dei figli e per poter sviluppare azioni psicopedagogiche finalizzate a garantire il più possibile una "sana" relazione madre detenuta-figlio all'esterno del carcere.
