THE METAPHORS OF SILENCE IN B. FUNDOIANU’S PRIVELIŞTI (Abstract) The aim of this study is to investigate the symbolic connotation of silence in the volume of poetry Privelişti by B. Fundoianu, analyzing the metaphorical occurences in which it appears. According to Jean-Jacques Wunenburger, the metaphor must not be considered as the linguistic reproduction of a visual image, but as a mechanism to create new images, thanks to its specific power to redescribe our reality. In the first part of this work, we propose a critical excursus concerning some of the main metaphor studies developed during the last century, in order to show the change of perspective in the analysis of this analogic figure: Ivor Armstrong Richards’ The Philosophy of Rhetoric, Max Black’s Models and Metaphor, Michele Prandi’s Grammaire philosophique des tropes and Paul Ricœur’s La Métaphore vive. In the second part, we demonstrate that, in B. Fundoianu’s poetry, silence metaphorically suggests a return to the origin, being constantly associated with water as matricial element.
