Abstract

Social sciences methods represent a useful guiding tool for socially efficient planning choices in order to plan place-based strategies for the development of places. The concept of social efficiency refers to the ability to improve the quality of life and reduce the condition of territorial disparity. The paper describes the methodological choices for identifying the system of indicators and evaluating the human and territorial capital, including the statistical techniques for modelling the synthetic index. The methodology is tested on the territorial context of the Crati Valley (Calabria, Italy) in order to start a comparison with the four project areas identified by the National Strategy for Inner Areas in Calabria.
