The essay develops a double reflection on forms of representation: on the one hand, on the use of images by the Black Panthers Party; and, on the other, on the impact that the BPP has had in the contemporary visual imagination. The essay analyses forms according to a perspective of an internal gaze and of an external gaze, in which the party emerges as a political novelty to be interpreted. But it is the contemporary scenario that takes up the image of the BPP to be explored as a missing image.

Abstract

The essay develops a double reflection on forms of representation: on the one hand, on the use of images by the Black Panthers Party; and, on the other, on the impact that the BPP has had in the contemporary visual imagination. The essay analyses forms according to a perspective of an internal gaze and of an external gaze, in which the party emerges as a political novelty to be interpreted. But it is the contemporary scenario that takes up the image of the BPP to be explored as a missing image.
