The paper focuses on some reminiscences from Virgil’s Aeneid (particularly from books 2 and 6) in Giorgio Caproni’s Il passaggio d’Enea. The aim is twofold: on the one hand, to pinpoint and scrutinize various echoes from the Aeneid identifiable in Caproni’s poem (e.g. Verg. Aen. 5,865 ossibus albos, 6,202 celeres, 261 pectore firmo, 9,189 lumina rara micant); on the other hand, to show how the poetic memory of Virgilian lines led the inspiration of Caproni and permeated the composition of the Passaggio, allowing the poet to associate as much as possible, in a contemporary transposition, the path of his Aeneas with that of the Virgilian Aeneas and thus to assure the twentieth-century Aeneas, symbol of the exiled and losers, the same paradigmatic status of the epic hero.
