In the wake of Matte Bon's communicative grammar and Prandi's grammar of choices, the aim of this article is to refer the appearances of imperfecto in the novel Los enamoramientos by Javier Marías to the uses recorded by Matte Bon, in order to highlight the fact that the choice of imperfecto is above all a question of perspective which exceeds temporal and aspectual meaning. Imperfecto is both basis-tense of narrative tone and the way in which the background, the previous situation, the margin, what is in the air or in dreams, appears. But imperfecto is firstly the thematic perspective which makes possibile the rematic one. That’s why we could say that imperfecto acts as a horizon.
