Abstract

The contribution intends to analyze, pedagogically, the role of the elderly person and, in particular, the educational relationship that exists, within the family, between grandparents and grandchildren. The family is the first constitutive cell of society where life is generated in love and day after day it is nourished in growth and filial education. Each subjectivity, in order to grow and develop harmoniously, needs to be recognized in its characteristic peculiarities. In childhood, the child receives, through refined and complex relational dynamics with parental figures and grandparents, an imprimatur of recognition. The human being continuously constitutes himself as such, discovering himself and progressively ascending to the knowledge of his peculiarities and characteristics that make him a person, through the other, in the relationship. The narration of real life stories often declines the existence of the elderly, as if the story were functional to education, a maieutic and transformative operation of the interior. Within the family, memories, experiences and experiences are transmitted that make grandparents indispensable witnesses of real life, educators ante litteram, in an era like ours dramatically marked by superficiality and oblivion. Grandparents in the family microcosm remain constantly open to listening and to dialogue with their grandchildren, who in the hectic and standardized daily life sometimes do not find the authentic availability of adults. Grandparents spontaneously manage to calibrate proximity and distance by relating with their grandchildren with spontaneity and awareness. The most authentic and fruitful condition of grandparents within the family is that of mediators and educators capable of showing grandchildren the existence of a heritage of values to be rediscovered and re-proposed. By cultivating through education the perennial values of the person's existence together with others, the fundamental qualities to be acquired in a world in need of solidarity and social friendship, of attention to people more than to things.
