Pagine caricaturali e «senza pietà». Luigi Russo da Verga a De Roberto

The essay investigates Luigi Russo's reading of the transition from The Malavoglia to Mastro-don Gesualdo. In emphasizing the lyricism of the former and the tragic epicism of the latter, he also notes the poetic superiority of The Malavoglia over the greater prosaic nature of the Mastro, especially in reference to the caricature crowd of minor characters. The judgment hides an aesthetic that prefers poetic writing over the «proper novel», and at the same time suggests a moral judgment which denies artistic value to the work when it is not corroborated by a positive ethical tension. By this route the judgment also turns negative for the Novelle rusticane when their critical radicality does not offer emotional glimmers. Thus when he has to read De Roberto's I Viceré, Russo, recognizing the greatness of the work, unlike Croce, finds himself unable to trace the ethical pathos in it, although he recognizes its «critical ardor».

Il saggio indaga la lettura che Luigi Russo dà del passaggio dai Malavoglia al Mastro-don Gesualdo. Nel sottolineare la liricità del primo e l’epicità tragica del secondo, rileva anche la superiorità poetica dei Malavoglia rispetto alla maggiore prosaicità del Mastro, specie in riferimento alla folla caricaturale di personaggi minori. Il giudizio nasconde un’estetica che preferisce la scrittura poetica rispetto al «romanzo vero e proprio» e insieme suggerisce un giudizio morale che nega artisticità all’opera quando questa non è corroborata da una tensione ideale. Per questa via il giudizio si fa negativo anche per le Novelle rusticane, quando la loro radicalità critica non offre spiragli emotivi. Così quando deve leggere I viceré di De Roberto, Russo, riconoscendo la grandezza dell’opera, a differenza di Croce, si trova nell’impossibilità di rintracciarvi il pathos etico, pur riconoscendone l’«ardore critico».
